Physiology: The Critical Concepts in Human Physiology is the most appropriate text for a survey course in human physiology; it is also appropriate for students interested in a physiology course that covers some of the biological and biomedical sciences. It offers a comprehensive and up-to-date view of human physiology. It first defines the definition, science, and scope of human physiology, then presents an overview of the major organ systems, and includes sections on systems and subsystems such as circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, and endocrine systems, and processes such as cellular metabolism, molecular biology, and somatic genetics. The author has performed extensive laboratory work in Dr. Ramesh Bijlani MD’s laboratory on circulating prolactin and LH in ewes. They have also studied the effect of hypophysectomy on pituitary secretions in male rhesus monkeys. Professor Bijlani has published his findings in his articles titled, “Prolactin-like substances,” “Serum LH determinations: effects of changing the decapartmental configuration of immunoassay systems in the same individual,” and “Testosterone sulfate in the serum of rhesus monkeys after hypophysectomy.”
The book has been written to provide an overview and an exposition of the entire field of endocrinology and metabolism and it is intended for lectures and seminars on a course in the field. The sections include sections on Endocrinology, Metabolism and Growth and Theories of Growth, The Neuroendocrine Systems, and The “Syndromes.” The first chapter in each section offers a broad overview and an exposition of the area covered by the section. The second chapter gives an exposition of the underlying mechanisms and pathophysiology, and provides a detailed examination of a number of physiological mechanisms that will play an important part in the later discussion. The third chapter consists of a critical examination of the various proposed theories of growth regulation, followed by an extensive discussion of the complex hormonal and neurohumoral systems that control growth and metabolism. The fourth chapter deals with the control of metabolism, followed by the concluding examination of the most widely recognized syndromes of hyper-, or hypo-function. The book also discusses a wide variety of topics such as various approaches to the problems of the control of secretion of hormones and the control of the release of neurotransmitters, the role of the adrenal medulla in the acute stress response, the control of sleep and appetite, and the general control of metabolism, the control of neurotransmitter release, and much more.
